Forum member ottermaton solved his problems by upgrading to Linux kernel version 2.6.38-1:
”(previously I was unable to use the scroll feature on the side of the pad and also could not set the synclient to disable the touchpad momentarily after pressing a key). When I first got this machine I tried and tried and tried to get those features working, to no avail. This was about a year ago, so I can't begin to tell you what things I tried, but there was a LOT. I never got it sorted and never read of anyone doing so, even though I would search around a bit from time to time. A very nice surprise, and did NOTHING but install the new kernel.”
