As you might have noticed the mixer-module is lacking an option to choose between soundcards.
To solve this we can create a simple config file which tells the system which card should be used.
This is the content of this file, replace the 0 with the number of the card which should be used:

Sometimes, and it may happen, you install an application and all goes OK, but you cannot find it in the menu. First: notify developers in the forum. As far as I know there isn't a GUI for this. These steps have worked for me at least with GTK applications. I have not tested this but I guess it should work with KDE apps as well.

Since Firefox is not installed by default in Bodhi Linux it is not pre-configured to use the apturl protocol that allows installation of software from the Bodhi Add Software Site.

Somewhat “recent” versions of Firefox have allowed a simple configuration of apturl. Firefox would provide a pop-up window when you clicked an apt link that would allow you to navigate to and select /usr/bin/apturl and that resolved the issue.

How-To hide Files

In Linux it is very easy to hide files. Just mark a file, rename it and add a “.” (rightclick > rename or simply click F2).

Example:

* Visible File: text.txt
* Hidden File: .text.txt

If you do not want to rename the file for some reason, create a new file named .hidden and open it with a text editor. Enter the files you want to hide and save it.

For Bodhi there are many instant messengers (IM) that support multiple instant messaging protocols. Some are listed here:

Many people have an IM account, but don't know about it. You definitely have an XMPP account if you use one of the following services:

At least on my system, a Lenovo u460 paird with a Buffalo Airstation WZR-HP-G300NH router, this card does not work with kernel 2.6.39 that comes with Bodhi 1.1.0. And when I say it doesn't work, I mean it's like a nuclear bomb: it takes the whole network down, even destroying the connection of anything directly wired to the router. I don't have an explanation for that at all. Anyway, kernel 2.6.35 works like a charm.

Even though you have configured Bodhi (at installation time) for auto-login, the Network Manager still asks you for your password at every boot to unlock the mysterious “keyring”. You can eliminate this hassle easily.

Occasionally, nm-applet “forgets” that your network and/or wireless are supposed to be enabled. First things first, install notify-osd:

sudo apt-get install notify-osd

Next we need to edit a single file to make sure notify-osd always starts up (by default it will only start in Gnome). To do this run the following:

Bodhi Linux AppCenter

The Bodhi Linux team has created the AppCenter as a very fast and simple way to install many common applications. While you won't find every application that you can install in Bodhi Linux at the AppCenter you will find what we consider to be “best of breed” applications for each particular category.

----------

Automounting

When Bodhi boots with the SDHC card already in the slot, it is mounted as read-only for the logged-in user, but read/write for the root user. If the card is inserted after boot-time, it is read/write for the logged-in user. This seems to be an issue with the automount command Bodhi runs at startup to mount internal partitions.

If you get a SEGV error that is preventing you from using Bodhi's graphic user interface (GUI) after logging in and you can't fix the issue by using the 'Recover' option in the error dialogue box, follow these steps to get a working GUI. Credit and thanks goes to people who helped me with this issue over a couple of IRC sessions.

Bodhi is especially suitable for installing on small, lightweight netbooks and tablets that travellers take with them on long-distance trips. So there should be an obvious, user-friendly tool to change the time zone, right?

Well there is a friendly tool, but it's not obvious.

My opinion on this is that we should do this in collaboration, much like the e17 guide. Call it The Bodhi Guide to Installing Software. That will give it some cohesiveness and a nice flow from one topic to the next. And, of course, it won't be such a huge project as the e17 guide. Anyone willing to volunteer to lead this, and recruit a crew? --- mark 2011/10/25 19:51

Bodhi uses a semi-rolling release cycle. Major version releases mark a core component change (for example, a new kernel) but not an overall system rethink as is the case in many other distributions. Changes in Bodhi will be incremental and you will never need to do a major system update.

USB-Modeswitch software

Mode switching tool for controlling “flip flop” USB devices

Several new USB devices have their proprietary Windows drivers onboard, especially WAN dongles. When plugged in for the first time, they act like a flash storage and start installing the driver from there. If the driver is already installed, the storage device vanishes and a new device, such as an USB modem, shows up. This is called the “ZeroCD” feature.

USB Wireless Routers

If you live in a place where wired broadband is unavailable, you might have access to 3G wireless broadband. These USB dongles are great except for one thing - you can use them on only one computer at a time. Now there are several manufacturers making routers into which a 3G USB dongle can be inserted and fed through the router, either wired or wireless. This is the one I'm using. Perhaps others with similar hardware will describe their experiences also.

Web-Browser

A web-browser is an application for surfing through the internet. Many web-browsers are able to play music and videos, and loading flash- and javacodes. Some are highly customizeable via add-ons. However, sometimes thats not what you want.
BE AWARE: Midori is under active development and DOES have some stability issues.
Adding Software in Bodhi is a breeze, making it easy to install your favorite browser.

In a poll of browser preference among Bodhi users we found an almost even split among 3 browsers: Firefox 3.6, Firefox 4.x, and Google Chrome. Picking any of these would have left a majority of users dissatisfied and a full 2/3 of them would STILL end up installing their browser of choice anyway.
